Le Vieux Port Review

Le Vieux Port Review

Way, way on down south, close to the Spanish border you’ll find the Gascony Gironde region of France. If sun, sand dunes, and direct access to the beach are what you’re after we’ve got a real gem for you. Le Vieux Port near Messanges is perfect for a family holiday. This park is a large site that has all the activities and facilities that you’d expect and is open from 5th May until 8th September. On site there is a busy reception where they speak practically every European language and where there is a cash point and internet access. They’ll also change traveller’s cheques for you.

The site has a wide variety of shopping (it’s not Blue Water or The Trafford Centre though) so you’ll be able to buy most of your holiday requirements from food to prezzies for Mrs Smith next door (for feeding the budgie, thank you very much).

When it comes to accommodation there are over 1,000 pitches to choose from and there’s something here for everyone. If canvas is your thing then the on-site tents with new for 2012 internal and external canvas will be what you’re looking for. Two or three bedrooms with a separate living and kitchen area make for a great holiday. Comfortable surroundings with tents the unzip during the day to create a really free feeling for the kids make this a great way to spend your holiday.

There’s a great selection of chalets available again with two or three bedrooms, cosy bathrooms and comfortable living space. Each chalet comes with a fully equipped kitchen (oven, gas hob, microwave, fridge freezer – absolutely everything for Haute Cuisine). They also have an outdoor area which allows you to make the most of the warm summer evenings.

Facilities & Activities at Le Vieux Port

The kids are well looked after with 5 different clubs and 2 children’s playgrounds. The clubs cater for all ages from 4 to 17 (yes I did say 17 – pizza evenings, shipwreck parties on the beach – see what I mean) and will mean that Mum and Dad get a well-earned break as well.

Swimming becomes a major event here at Le Vieux Port. There are seven pools to choose from. So whether you’re looking for indoor, outdoor, covered, water slides, water chutes, fountains, or plain old Jacuzzi (only here does a Jacuzzi become plain old!) this is the place to be. There’s even a theme park with a wave pool. not quite big enough for your surfboard but certainly tall enough to make a mighty splash.

Sports facilities on site are varied and include tennis, table tennis, squash, all the balls (volley, basket, foot and beach volley) and boules with regular tournaments organised on site. Supervised horse riding and pony trekking is a great way to keep the kids amused and there is a cinema open between 1st July and 31st August. One other thing, this is a large site so you can hire cycles. They’re great for getting around and for exploring the local countryside.

Evening entertainment centres around the bar which is modern, has a lively atmosphere and is open all season. There is also a family disco open during high season which is great place to practice your Wii Just Dance 3 moves.

Outside the camp get yourself along to Bordeaux – the centre of wine business in the region and a really pretty town to boot. Attractions wise you can start off with Adrenaline Parc. Paintballing, quad biking, a tree top trail (including a Tarzan jump) make it just perfect for your little thrill seekers. You can also visit glamorous Biarritz to see the Musee de la Mer or sea life museum.

Food on holiday can be a bit of a stress but not at La Vieux Port. There are numerous places where you can eat out or take away. There is a modern restaurant serving a good choice of local dishes and for the plainer tastes you’ll find a children’s menu. A snack bar opens for day time hunger pangs and a take away service selling burgers, pizzas, ice creams and roast chicken is also on offer. For a real taste of France try the creperie (you’ll not get more French than this unless it’s 20 Gauloises cigs). There is also a full pizzeria for less formal family meals. Your self-catering needs are also taken care of in the supermarket where they have a great range of foodstuffs in stock.
