Don’t forget Vaccination is Vital for Travel

| On 13, Aug 2013

With camping holidays enjoying a surge in popularity in recent years, many people are choosing

to camp in more exotic locations around the world as well as in the camping friendly countries of Europe.  Camping in the UK or Europe is no problem – there are well-appointed campsites with great facilities that make for a really comfortable camping experience.  However, if you’re intending to travel further afield for a camping holiday, it would be worth checking with a travel vaccination scheme/help forum. Lloyd’s Pharmacy’s have a Travel Vaccination Service to find out whether you need any vaccines before setting off on your holiday – which we’ve used and it seems to work really well.

Free Travel Needs Assessment

The free travel needs assessment service is available at the Lloyd’s Pharmacy concession at Selfridges in Oxford Street, London.  It’s a simple matter of completing the online registration form to sign up with Lloyds and then filling out a questionnaire with details of the country/countries you intend to visit (with dates).  This will then take you to a page where you fill in some simple details on your vaccination history – which diseases you’ve already been vaccinated against (if you’re not sure, then just choose ‘unsure’).

Making it Easy with an Online Questionnaire

Next comes a short questionnaire on your general health, including whether or not you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.  You’ll also need to give details of any allergies you have in this section.  Then there are couple of questions to answer on recent/current use of medicines, prescription only, over the counter, alternative remedies and recreational drug use.  One of the pharmacy’s medical staff will then assess your responses to the questionnaire to decide if you’re suitable for this treatment (the vaccinations needed).  Responses will be emailed to you within an hour on weekdays, within three hours on Saturdays and within 24 hours on a Sunday.  It’s then just a matter of phoning the pharmacy to book a suitable appointment for your vaccines.

Don’t Skip the Vaccines

Protecting yourself with the appropriate vaccinations is essential when travelling, especially when visiting areas of the world where infectious diseases are life-threatening in nature.  You may need to protect yourself against yellow fever, hepatitis, typhoid and meningococcal meningitis, to name but a few.  The last thing you need when you’re on the holiday of a lifetime is to have your visit ruined by disease.  Think of how miserable it is when you have an upset stomach when travelling – it can spoil your whole day and it’s usually just a case of Traveller’s Tummy which passes within 48 hours.

However, diseases that you need vaccinations for pose a much more serious health risk and you could end up seriously ill in hospital in some far flung corner of the world if you skip the vaccinations.  Preparing yourself beforehand with the right vaccines really is your best way of protecting yourself and your holiday.
