Doniford Bay

Nestling closely against the wilds of Exmoor, actually part of the Exmoor National Park, and with the spectacular green Somerset countryside, Doniford Bay is a perfect place for a young family to enjoy a summer holiday or a half term break in either the Spring or Autumn. Doniford Bay is right on the coast which means easy access to some wide sandy beaches.

Families staying at Doniford Park have a surprisingly wide choice of accommodation types. There are eight different types of caravans all with a range of fixtures and fittings and some with more space than others. All of them are available in two or three bedroom configurations and combined with the double sofa bed you can sleep six or eight people respectively. All caravans have a modern fully equipped kitchen where you can easily prepare self catering meals and they also have a gas fire in the lounge and private loos and showers – no communal shower blocks here thank you! There are TVs in the lounge and some caravans are even perfect for the family pet. For those visitors with specific mobility requirements there are a selection of adapted caravans on offer where kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms have been designed with these needs in mind. These caravans are also perfect for guests wish to travel and bring a registered assistance dog with them.

Some guests prefer a more “home from home” experience and Doniford Bay has a range of chalets to meet these needs. With fully fitted kitchens, heating throughout and enough drawers and cupboards to store a shed load of holiday “stuff” these chalets are just perfect.

Facilities & Activities

For the active family the e is also a wide range of sports activities on offer that includes tennis and French boules as well as a climbing wall with a Leap of Faith, zip wire and rope course for those looking for a white knuckle experience.

What holiday would be complete without swimming? Of course there is the nearby beach but Doniford Park has heated indoor and outdoor pools. The indoor pool, newly refurbished for 2014 has a spectacular water slide and also has a splash area for toddlers. The outdoor pool is perfect for ours of sun soaked fun, it even has a four lane water slide. The park also organises a range of water based activities, some subject to a small charge, that includes Water confidence, AquaGliders, Pool Kayaking and Turbo Paddlers.

You can keep the family entertained all day long at Doniford Park. Entertainments aimed at the children are provided in the morning and afternoon. Popular sessions include Live @, Project Talent and character fun time shows such as Polly’s Swim a Song, Rory, Punch and Judy, and DJ Neds Mash Up. In the evening there is also a selection of glittering West End style shows that are perfect for the whole family. Best of all for Mums and dads are the Kids Clubs. A range of clubs with activities  aimed at quite narrow age ranges means the kids are well organised and entertained and Mum and Dad can get some serious down time.

If you want to leave the park and sample the beauty on offer, and who could blame you, then there are many different things to see and do. The famous Cheddar Caves and Gorge, where the cheese comes from, are within easy reach and make an interesting day. There are plenty of wonderful sandy beaches along this stretch of coast and Dunster Castle and the East Somerset Steam Railway offer up a sample of local history that is worth seeing. Exmoor National Park offers a wonderful selection of outdoors things to do and places to see as well.

Back in the park after a busy day out thoughts turn to food and Donniford Bay makes feeding the family as straight forward as possible. Alongside the excellent kitchen facilities in your caravans and chalets there is an onsite SPAR convenience store where you can stock up on all your foodstuffs. If you are looking for a break from routine why not treat yourself to a meal out. The Cafe bar and Grill is a welcoming, comfortable place to head off for a special meal and best of all it is open  for breakfast and lunch as well as dinner. There is also a traditional chippy where responsibly sourced fish is freshly prepared and served with proper chips – salt and vinegar as well!
